Billie Eilish has been involved in music since an early age. She was home-schooled in Highland Park, Los Angeles and raised by a family of actors and musicians. She joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus at age eight. By the age of eleven, Billie began writing and singing her own songs. At the time, her older brother was already writing, performing, and producing his own songs with his band.
Billie is 16 now and has accomplished so much already. By age 15, she already acclaimed her debut EP, had a pretty much sold out tour and tallied up more than 3 millions streams a month on Spotify!
Billie Eilish started gaining attention in 2016 from her debut single “Ocean Eyes”. The song was written by her brother Finneas who is also a singer. Eilish originally recorded the song for her dance teacher who wanted to choreograph to the tune. She then uploaded the song to Soundcloud in 2016 and the track has since accumulated over 2 million streams.
In 2017, Eilish signed with Interscope Records. She put out a song on the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack and it’s only been 2 months since she released her debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me. Some background info on Don’t Smile at Me….Eilish hates smiling. She stated in an interview with Harpers Bazaar that it made her feel weak, powerless and small.
“I hate smiling. It makes me feel weak and powerless and small. I’ve always been like that; I don’t smile in any pictures. If you look at my Instagram, I have a resting bitch face and I guess I just look sad all the time. But you know how when you’re walking down the street and somebody smiles at you? You’re forced to smile back, that’s the polite response. It’s like you have no control over it. If I don’t smile back you’re gonna think I’m horrible. Maybe I am for thinking this, but whatever. And if you don’t smile at me, we’re good. You can go on with your day.”
Billie started writing songs when she was 11 years old. It was a way for her to express her thoughts. According to Eilish, her first “real” composition was inspired by the popular TV Show, “The Walking Dead”. The song is called ‘Fingers Crossed.’ She says that she literally just watched The Walking Dead and took lines from it. Eilish says if you just watch all of The Walking Dead, you will find some things and episode titles that are in her song.
Billie’s personal style is self described as “pretty weird”. Most people like to dress similar to others so that they fit in and feel comfortable around others.
For Eilish, it’s the opposite. She feels more comfortable when her look doesn’t fit in. Her comfort level is when people are judging her, she loved to be judged.
Most of the clothes she wears is pretty baggy and I would describe it as the 90s baggy look.
Eilish is enjoying just getting her music out right now and touring. After her tour, she would like to do more photography and videography and direct videos when she can. Also in line would be a fashion line, although she points out that it would be pretty weird for people to be buying what she wore. So potentially, she just won’t wear what she makes.
Billie’s current song that is making a smash on alternative radio is “you should see me in a crown”. The song is more edgy than her song “ocean eyes” but also mentions “ocean eyes” in the song.
The video is also edgy in that it has spiders crawling all over her! Even crawling in her hair and out of her mouth! Eilish has some youtube videos out there that show that it is real, this isn’t CGI kids!
